The holiday season starts has already started and will really kick in once Thanksgiving rolls around. Before long, your evening drives around town will be lit by Christmas lights around every corner. We’ve gone through a tough year. We all deserve a bit of joy and celebration that we’re still standing and celebrating holidays is a great way to do it. The important thing to remember is that you have to do so safely. As electricians, we wanted to give you some simple electrical safety tips that can keep your home safe through the holidays.

Christmas Tree

If you’re into Christmas trees in your household, it’s vital to remember the risks associated with them. Live trees can be especially dangerous because they dry out and their pines are perfect kindling for a home fire. If you can, spritz the leaves with a bit of water to keep them moist and make sure you’re not putting the tree near anything that will get super hot. Additionally, and maybe most importantly, if you have lights on the tree, turn them off before you hit the hay for the night!

General Tips

We want to leave you with a few general tips that can apply to the holiday season and are also useful year-round.

  • Extension cords shouldn’t be hot to the touch. Keep an eye out and feel if they are hot every once in a while to ensure everything is in working order.
  • Use lights rated for outdoor use. If you’re installing outdoor lighting, or just putting up temporary lights for the holiday season, make sure your lights are rated for outdoor use. Indoor lights may be too fragile and could cause problems for you, especially if you have to deal with inclement weather.
  • Hang your holiday lights carefully with insulated hooks. Nails, tacks, and screws are not safe. You can’t brute force this one. Buy the insulated hooks and it’ll be easier to install and much safer to boot.

We hope you learned something from this blog about electrical safety. As we go through this holiday season, we hope you enjoy spending time with your loved ones and don’t take it for granted. Happy holidays!
