There’s nothing worse than not having heat on a freezing cold night. Our Natick area heating experts explain what to do if your furnace isn’t heating your home.

Why isn’t my furnace working?

No heat? No problem! Oftentimes a faulty or malfunctioning furnace has a simple fix. Here are some simple ways you can try to isolate the issues.

5 Troubleshooting Questions to Ask

There are many parts of your furnace that could be hindering its ability to function as designed. Answering these questions can help you narrow down the problem area(s) of your heater:

  • When was the last time I changed the air filter? Changing your air filter is integral to your heating and cooling systems working correctly. If you haven’t changed your filter in the past three months, now may be the time to do so.
  • What is my thermostat set to? It may seem simple, but sometimes a guest, child, or someone simply unfamiliar with your thermostat may adjust the settings and unknowingly disrupt your settings. Make sure the system is set to “auto” and that the temperature is set correctly.
  • Is the power on? While widespread power outages will likely be hard to miss, there’s always the chance that your circuit breaker shorts or you have a gas leak that can cause problems with your system functioning correctly.
  • How long does it take for my heater to work normally? No system will heat an entire home as soon as you turn it on; however, you likely have a good sense of how long your system takes to make a difference in your home under normal conditions. If your system is taking longer to heat your home than usual, you may be in need of a simple tune-up.
  • Is the pilot light on? If you use an older furnace with a pilot light, make sure the light is on! If the light has gone out for any reason, you can attempt to relight it on your own. If you have problems, contact your local HVAC technician for assistance.
