The smoke detector is an incredibly important component of your home’s safety features. Hopefully it’s a device that you don’t need to use very often. But when something goes unused for a long period of time, and is kept out of direct sight like the smoke detector is, it’s easy to neglect essential routine care.
Read on to learn how you can properly care for your smoke detectors in order to feel safe at home.
Cleaning
Giving your detector a good clean will help keep them in great working condition. Remove the unit from the wall or ceiling and dust it off with a microfiber cloth. You can also use a soft bristled paint brush to get dust out of all the nooks and crannies.
Remember:
- Never submerge the piece in water
- Avoid using chemical cleaners
- Take extra care around electrical components
- Do your best to repeat this cleaning about every 6 months
Batteries and Testing
A smoke detector without the power to do its job is of no use to you! Try to set a reminder on your phone or write it on the family calendar to change the batteries at least twice a year.
Once you’ve replaced the batteries, it’s time to test out the fresh ones. Push the button down until it begins to beep for a few moments until it has been reset. Then you may return it to the wall or ceiling. If your detector is directly connected to the fire department, be sure to call and let them know that you’ll be testing the unit to avoid a false alarm.
Replacement
Your smoke detector will not last forever, but typically you can count on about 10 years. Eventually they will wear out, collect too much debris and dust, and will simply not work like they used to.
Once their time is drawing to a close, take note of which model you need and head to the store for a replacement and 10 more years of fire alarm safety!
