On the 4th of July, you’ll hear oohs and ahhs as fireworks light up the sky in celebration. Be sure to view them safely and away from powerlines, as they can cause danger in your community.

They can cause fires, power outages, and injure people if they are standing too close.

Massachusetts Firework Laws

Massachusetts firework laws state that it is illegal for any private citizen to use, possess, or sell fireworks in the state or to purchase them legally elsewhere and then transport them across state lines.

This law refers to any article designed to produce a visible or audible effect.

Fines for selling fireworks range from $100 to $1000 and you can be both fined and or imprisoned.

For possession of fireworks, you can be fined and they will be confiscated. The fine is between $10 and $100.

If convicted of this illegal act, all fireworks will be seized.

Professional Displays

Personal firework shows are illegal, but you will want to enjoy them the safe way, at a public display usually put on by an organization or the city.

Depending on the size of the show, they can cost up to $100,000 to put on.

While watching the show, be sure to stay away from the area where they are being set off. This means staying at least 280 feet away.

Consider bringing chairs or blankets to sit on, if there is space to do so.

Power Outages

Large firework shows are set off away from powerlines to prevent power outages.

But when illegal fireworks are set off near power lines, they can cause power outages, not just to your own home, but to an entire neighborhood.

As noises already scare some people and animals, when it goes dark, it can make it worse.

Be sure to always have a plan in place just in case of an emergency power outage.

Have flashlights in places that are easy to reach or often occupied. This may include the bedroom, living room, kitchen, or bathroom.

If a power outage does occur, remember to:

  • Keep your freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home, it could cause a gas leak.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Check on neighbors.

If the power outage goes on long enough, it can spoil food in your freezer and refrigerator. It can also cause heat stroke during the summer with the AC not working.
